A reel machine is the most thoroughly engineered game of chance in common use, and the least transparent to look at. Its outcomes are chosen by a random number generator, mapped onto reel positions by a table the player never sees, and paid according to a schedule that fixes the return before the machine is ever installed.

From mechanism to mapping

The earliest machines were purely mechanical. Three spinning reels carried a fixed number of symbol positions each, and the probability of any combination was exactly what the strips implied: with twenty positions per reel, three reels give eight thousand combinations, and a single combination is 1/8000. The top prize was constrained by that arithmetic, because a prize larger than the machine could fund from eight thousand plays would lose money.

Electromechanical machines in the 1960s added hopper payouts and more complex circuitry but kept the same constraint. It was removed in the 1980s by a mapping technique: the machine's software holds a list of internal stops far longer than the physical reel, and each internal stop points at one of the physical positions. Several internal stops can point at a common symbol and only one at a rare symbol, so probabilities can be set independently of how the strip looks. The visible reel became a display of the result rather than the source of it.

The random number generator

The outcome is chosen by a random number generator that cycles continuously whether or not anyone is playing. When a play is initiated, the current values are taken and mapped through the stop table to a combination. Two consequences follow directly, and both contradict widespread belief.

First, the timing of the play does not select a better outcome in any usable sense: the generator advances far faster than a person can aim at it. Second, the machine is not due for anything. Each play is drawn from the same distribution as the last, exactly as described in the variance article, and a long run without a prize does not raise the probability of the next one.

Return to player and hold

Return to player is the total prize value the paytable pays out per unit staked, computed over the machine's complete cycle of outcomes. It is a design parameter, not a measurement, and the operator's share is one minus it. A worked example on a deliberately small machine shows how the figure is produced.

The two-symbol row aggregates the combinations in which the first two reels show the low symbol and the third does not. The completed schedule returns 0.8945 per unit, so the operator's share is 10.55%. Note where the return sits: the top prize, which is the reason the machine is attractive, supplies less than a quarter of it, while the small frequent prize supplies more.

Reading a machine honestly

Three things follow from the structure. The symbols visible above and below the payline are display, not evidence about probability. A near miss is not a near anything: the outcome was chosen before the reels were drawn, and the arrangement that shows two top symbols and one blank is simply one of the losing outcomes. And a machine's declared return applies to its whole cycle of outcomes, which is longer than any session, so it describes the design rather than the afternoon.

Bonus features

Modern designs place a substantial part of the return inside secondary features rather than in the base schedule. Mathematically this is a re-partition of the same total: the base game is trimmed to fund the feature, so the feature must be reached often enough and pay well enough to return what was taken. It changes the shape of the distribution, generally raising volatility, and it does not change the total unless the designer intended it to.
